Avoiding Knock-Off Japanese Kimonos

Watch Out For Imitation Japanese Kimonos

Japanese kimonos are iconic and versatile garments. Discovered centuries ago, they are as popular as ever today. With their bright, vibrant designs and intricate patterns, it’s no wonder they are worn in so many countries. Unfortunately, with the popularity, comes the rise of knock-off kimonos on the market. It can be difficult to distinguish between authentic and fake kimonos. Thankfully, with a few tips and tricks, you can easily tell the difference between an authentic Japanese kimono and a knock-off.

Authenticity Matters
When it comes to buying a Japanese kimono, authenticity matters. Authentic kimonos are made from high-quality materials such as cotton or silk. Some even feature traditional embroidery using time-tested techniques and intricate details that are difficult to replicate with mass-produced manufacturing methods. Furthermore, authentic Japanese kimonos come with traditional accessories such as obi or sashes. Fake kimonos often lack quality and may be made from cheap materials. These robes won’t stand up to normal wear and tear.

Buy From a Direct Importer
The best way to find an authentic Japanese kimono is to buy directly from a Japanese importer. There are several reputable retailers in the USA. These companies specialize in offering genuine kimonos at affordable prices. When shopping online for a Japanese kimono, make sure you look for the “Made in Japan” tags or labels on the product page. This will help ensure you receive an authentic product rather than a cheap imitation. Additionally, when buying directly from a reputable dealer, you will find unique designs not available anywhere else!

Be Cautious on Sites like Amazon & Etsy
When shopping for a Japanese kimono online, it is important to use caution on sites like Amazon or Etsy. There is often little oversite of the claims that are made. Some of the “Japanese” items found on these sites are knock-offs. They are produced in China, Bali, and other countries that tend to exploit labor. Factories often lack quality control or even basic safety standards. Additionally, some sellers take advantage of unsuspecting customers by charging exorbitant prices for low-quality items. Low-cost labor and inferior-quality fabrics equal a larger profit for the dealer.

Misleading Advertising

We conducted an online search for Kimonos, and a reseller on Amazon appeared. The ad clearly stated Japanese Kimonos, Japanese Robe, and Women’s Japanese Kimono.  If you looked carefully at the ad, further down we saw a line with Japanese-Style Kimono. This was our tip-off. We have never seen a listing for an authentic Japanese Kimono with the phrase Japanese-Style. It is redundant and isn’t applicable. This is only used to suggest it is truly Japanese.

We clicked on the ad and sure enough. When we dove into the description we found the following: Country of Origin: China.  Fabric Type: 100% Polyester. These dealers provide misleading information before the purchase. For this reason alone it is best to stick with experienced, long-term USA dealers. These businesses stand behind service, quality, and customer satisfaction. If you want an authentic Japanese kimono experience, purchase kimonos and yukatas made in Japan but sold in the USA.

Another tip to discern if a kimono is authentic is to read through reviews. Whether it is Etsy, eBay, or Amazon, we often find similar complaints about shipping times, lack of customer service, and incorrect sizing.  Another common complaint is receiving a print that didn’t match what was advertised. The most common issue we hear from their customers is poor quality.

Customers Speak Out

Here are a few reviews we spotted on Amazon listings: “Not worth the price”, “False advertising”, and “parts of the seam unstitched.” Others read, “poor fit and cheap fabric”, and “not at all what I was expecting.” “The pattern isn’t what is shown in the listing.”  As we read more reviews, it didn’t get much better, “Ill-fitting polyester, zero comfort.”

Going further down the line, we found, “The texture of the fabric is not at all soft.” “Now I know why it was only $20.00, you get what you pay for.” “Looks like something mass-produced in China for $2.” “This cheap kimono is nowhere near the quality I paid for another kimono. Now I know why the other one cost two and a half times as much. Buyer beware.”

In conclusion, when it comes to buying an authentic Japanese Kimono it pays to do your research. Make sure you know what kind of fabric you desire. Read ads and reviews thoroughly. Shop for genuine pieces from reputable dealers. We recommend buying from retailers in the USA. Many customers report issues when purchasing online from Japanese dealers directly. By working with a USA-based company, returns and shipping are straightforward. Communication is easy and there is no language translation gap.

One dealer entering into their 29th year in business is Chopa.com. They began in 1994 and are still a leading provider of authentic kimonos and yukata robes. By following these tips you can rest assured knowing your new outfit is genuinely made in Japan!

Watch out for knock-off kimonos on the web.

Authentic Kimonos are above the rest.

TOP SELLING KIMONOS

Thursday, April 21st, 2022

Can you say Time Flies?  We sure can.  It seemed like just a week ago, we published the previous month’s list of Top Selling Japanese Kimonos and Yukatas on our online Kimono Shop. We must be getting older or perhaps we are moving a bit slower.  It has been a busy few weeks as our Spring Kimono order arrived.  It took several flights from Japan, several more transfers across the USA, and finally four different days of deliveries to our warehouse in Florida.

The good news is that everything is now up on the website and ready for fast shipping. Quick shipping is something we are proud of and something we take seriously to make sure our customers receive their purchases as quickly as possible.  After all, who wants to wait for something they order online? For most orders, 99.9% ship within one business day of order receipt, and many orders ship the same day.

We are still adjusting to the new arrivals and space is a bit tight in some areas of the warehouse.  Unpacking all of those cartons and boxes takes time. After 28 years of operating this business, we know how valuable it is to keep our nose to the grindstone and persevere. In time, everything is unpacked and securely stocked on our long lines of shelves.

So let’s go to the Top Sellers. Without further delay, the Best Selling Kimonos and Yukatas for March 2022 were:

1) BLACK KIMONO SAMURAI ROBE

2)  NAVY KAGOME YUKATA

3) TREE OF LIFE YUKATA

4) DRAGON AND BAMBOO YUKATA

5) NAVY HANA YUKATA

To all of the customers who purchased these styles, we say congratulations, you have great taste in Japanese robes. Let’s take a quick peek at these five best sellers.

Black Kimono Samurai Robe. This is a long-time favorite among our customers.  This kimono is all black and produced in 100% broadcloth.  Broadcloth is often used in high-end dress shirts. It features densely woven threads that produce a crisper feel than traditional cotton fabric and has a soft, smooth feel.  It stays cooler in the warmer months and softens within a few washing cycles. As with all of our robes, we recommend cold water washing. This helps to extend the life of the fabric and design. This handsome robe is available in four sizes.

Navy Kagome Yukata. This men’s yukata is one of our most popular year-round. Kagome translates in Japan to woven bamboo and that is the inspiration for this distinctive Japanese design. Produced in 100% cotton in a dark navy blue and white color palette. This Japanese yukata has an artistic rendition of bamboo silhouetted against subtle contrasting circles that brings to mind old-world craftsmanship and simplicity. The Kagome yukata makes a great Father’s Day gift or Graduation present.

Tree of Life Yukata. This stylish yukata for men displays a geometric design well known in Japan as a tortoise print. Seen in Japanese clothing and textiles since 2000 B.C., makes it one of the oldest symbols known today. The samurai used this pattern as it represented stability; therefore, its popularity can be traced back over 200 years ago. In old Japan, warriors wore these robes on special occasions such as holidays or battles. Because the style represents longevity, it will be an excellent addition to your wardrobe that you can enjoy for years to come!

Dragon and Bamboo Yukata. Expertly crafted in Japan of 100% soft cotton with a shrink-resistant finish. The dragon is considered a symbol of endurance and strength.  The dragon is a water deity. Bamboo is known for its beauty and is believed to attract luck and prosperity. The navy blue and white design complements the water deity theme of this robe.

Navy Hana Yukata. Hana translates to flower in Japan.  This Japanese artist-designed print features beautiful floral images melded with a striped bamboo print. The sophisticated pattern includes circles of flowers. The circle symbolizes Enso which means the body and mind are in a perfect state of “flow.”  Produced in a navy and white design, this yukata is always a good choice for lady’s yukatas.

New Shipment of Kimono and Yukata Arrived!

Monday, January 18th, 2021

Chopa strives to have a full offering of Japanese Kimono and Yukata at all times, but with sudden surges in sales related to Holiday Gifts, a mention in social media or a large bulk order, we experience shortages from time to time. We like to be busy and shipping hundreds and hundreds of robes, but we dislike running out and work hard to alleviate the dreaded “Out of Stock” notation on any particular style.

The good news is that a new shipment, the first of the year, just arrived and we are pleased to announce that over 25 sizes and colors are back in stock and ready to ship. Among the list of new arrivals are the Men’s Kagome yukata, the ever popular “Dragon” yukata, Tree of Life, Daimonji Kimono, Royal Cranes, Ukiyoe, Dragon and Tiger, Cherry Blossoms, and Ribbons Kimono.

Some styles are offered in five different sizes and those are back in stock. This is just the first of many more shipments scheduled over the year. We generally receive new inventory monthly along with several large shipments in the Spring, Summer and Fall. It has been more difficult scheduling over the past 6 months due to Covid restrictions throughout Japan. Production has slowed and in many situations, our producers are working with smaller staffs for social distancing and to allow others to work from home.

We welcome inquiries on any pattern or style of kimono or yukata we offer. If you don’t see a size in stock, email us and we can let you know when we expect more to arrive. Chopa offers a free email notification service to anyone. When a particular size or style is available, we send you a courtesy email alerting you of the news.  There is never an obligation to make a purchase and we will only send you one email.  It’s a free service and we are happy to monitor upcoming shipments for you.

Happy Shopping!
