Learn About Kimonos From a Pro (Part 3)

September 25th, 2022

Managing Partner, Ron Irving of Chopa.com sat down recently for a live question and answer session at a professional trade show. With the growing popularity of Kimonos and Yukatas across the globe, attendees were very interested in what Mr. Irving had to say. His expertise and management of Chopa have allowed this company to remain a leading provider of authentic Japanese robes to customers everywhere. Excerpts from his interview were previously posted on this site. This is part 3 and the final post.

How do you choose the right kimono for an occasion?

“Kimonos come in a wide variety of styles and purposes. Choosing the right kimono for an occasion can be tricky. But following some basic guidelines can help. The two most common styles of kimonos are formal and casual. Formal kimonos are usually made with long sleeves and are ornately decorated. They are worn for special occasions such as weddings or tea ceremonies. For example, at a Tea Ceremony, you would wear an extremely formal kimono. Whereas for a festival you might choose something colorful and festive.

Casual kimonos are made of lighter-weight fabrics like cotton and cotton-sateen and usually have shorter sleeves. They can be worn for everyday activities such as going to the grocery store or taking a walk. Choose a kimono color that coordinates well with your skin tone and hair color. Black typically works well for everyone, but other colors such as white, red, and blue can also be flattering depending on your complexion.

If you are unsure about the level of formality required for an event, it is always best to overdress rather than underdress. Formal kimonos can be quite expensive. If you are not ready to make that kind of investment then purchase the next level down or what you can afford. I have seen countless situations where a yukata with a colorful and distinctive design outmatched a formal kimono. The cost was a fraction as well.”

Who is your favorite designer of Japanese kimonos?

“If we are speaking historically, when it comes to kimono design, there are few names more iconic than Hiroaki Oikawa. Born in Osaka in 1948, Oikawa is a self-taught artist who first rose to prominence in the 1970s. He created bold and vibrant kimono designs with the use of traditional Japanese motifs combined with modern pop culture references. He helped to redefine kimono design for a new generation. Today, Oikawa is widely considered one of the most important kimono designers in Japan. His work can be found in the permanent collections of several museums around the world. If you’re looking for a truly unique kimono experience, then Hiroaki Oikawa is the designer for you.

Most people, myself included don’t purchase or wear designer kimonos. I prefer more mainstream, made of cotton, easy to care for, and comfortable to wear. A former business partner of mine used to splurge and purchase original designer kimonos to wear. I noticed one day, that he rarely wore them. They became artwork for his walls because they were so special to him. Visiting his house for a dinner party was a treat because guests would stare at them in awe of the beauty, detail, colors, and style. It was like attending a museum with cocktails and great Japanese food he would always serve.

I asked him once about this and he said they were just too special for him to wear. For the amount of money he paid he opted to display them and just admire them. They were certainly worthy of dramatically distinguished wall art. But they reminded me of visiting my grandmother’s house when I was a child. She bought brand new furniture and was always afraid of having anyone sit on it because it might become ruined.”

Where can I buy a good kimono or yukata?

“What can I say? If you’re looking for a kimono or yukata, one great option is Chopa – Your Kimono Source. At Chopa, you’ll find a wide selection of kimonos and yukatas in a variety of colors and styles. Whether you’re looking for a traditional kimono or something more modern, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. In addition to kimonos and yukatas, Chopa also sells obis and sashes, Tabi socks and other accessories to complete your look.

I became a managing partner in Chopa for my love of the garments, more so than money. Some people will say, yeah, right, but for me it is true. I want other people to fall in love with the heritage, the styles and symbolism Japan has given us. Few things in life give some people such joy, but for me kimonos are as good as it gets.

Like some people love cars, others horses and some prefer sports or photography, I fell in love with kimonos many decades ago and it just gets better everyday. Working in retail will always bring some complaints, but our thank you notes exceed complaints 100 times to one. So if you’re looking for a kimono or yukata, be sure to check out Chopa – They really are Your Kimono Source.”

Thank you Ron Irving.

Learn About Kimonos From A Pro (Part 2)

September 15th, 2022

Ron Irving is a Managing Partner of Chopa – Your Kimono Source. Established in 1994, Chopa continues to be a leading provider of authentic Japanese Kimonos and Yukata robes.  Ron recently sat down for a one-on-one interview with a live audience at a business trade show.  We are pleased to share some excerpts from this fascinating interview. This is part 2.

How do you know which kimono or yukata to wear?

I like to tell people it is a personal choice. With that, there are some caveats. The Japanese kimono was originally a formal garment most commonly made of silk. It was typically worn by women on important occasions, such as weddings and funerals. Yukata, on the other hand, are casual kimonos that are made of lighter materials, such as cotton, linen, or polyester. Yukata are typically worn in the summer months and at festivals. Because they are less formal than kimonos, yukata are more commonly seen in everyday life.

When choosing a kimono or yukata, it is important to consider the occasion. If you are attending a wedding or funeral, it is appropriate to wear a kimono. For more casual occasions, such as summer festivals, a yukata would be more appropriate. And if you’re not sure which one to wear, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and go with a kimono.

With these guidelines in mind, you’ll be sure to find the perfect kimono or yukata for any occasion. If you are wearing it at home or small gatherings with friends and family, either style works. In the western world, we tend to prefer comfort over all else.

What’s the difference between kimonos and yukatas?

Kimonos and yukatas are both Japanese garments that are worn on special occasions. However, there are some key differences between the two. Japanese kimonos are made from a variety of different materials, including silk, cotton, and linen. They are often brightly colored and feature intricate patterns.

Yukatas, on the other hand, are made from a single piece of fabric and are typically made of cotton. The fabric is also much lighter, making it more comfortable to wear in warm weather. In addition, kimonos are generally more formal than yukatas and are often worn to weddings and other special events. Yukatas, on the other hand, can be worn for a variety of different occasions, including festivals and fireworks displays.

What is your favorite Japanese kimono?

That isn’t a fair question. Japanese kimonos are some of the most beautiful and intricate garments in the world. I have always been fascinated by their design. If I had to select a favorite I would go with a yukata. Yukata are made of lightweight cotton, and they are typically worn in the summer. They are also often worn at Japanese festivals.

I love the way that yukata flows when you wear them, and I love the bright, vibrant colors that are typically used in their design. Kimono yukata are truly works of art, and I am proud to own one. I am normally warmer-blooded so the lighter-weight style works best for me. It is a personal choice. I always recommend that customers buy what they like and prefer. Don’t let someone else’s style or opinion influence you.

What do you think sets Japanese kimonos apart from other types of traditional clothing around the world?

Japanese kimonos are renowned for their beauty and elegance, setting them apart from other types of traditional clothing around the world. Formal kimonos are made of high-quality silk, which is dyed using a variety of methods to create intricate patterns. The kimono is also cut in a way that flatters the figure, and it is usually worn with an obi or sash, that cinches the waist.

In addition, Japanese kimonos are often accessorized with beautiful jewelry and hair combs. Yukata are a type of Japanese kimono that are made of lighter fabric and are typically worn in the summer. Kimono yukata are a hybrid of the two, and they are made of medium-weight fabric that can be worn in either spring or autumn. No matter what the season, Japanese kimonos are always a fashion statement.

                    Beautiful Kimonos

Learn About Kimonos From A Pro

September 2nd, 2022

Kimonos are a popular item of clothing in Japan, and they can be quite versatile. If you’re interested in learning more about kimonos, or in buying one for yourself, it can be helpful to get some advice from a pro. In this blog post, we’ll learn about kimonos from a professional who knows all there is to know about them.

Ron Irving is the Managing Partner of Chopa – Your Kimono Source. Established in 1994, Chopa continues to be a leading provider of authentic Japanese Kimonos and Yukata robes.  Ron recently sat down for a one-on-one interview for a live audience at a business trade exhibition.  We are proud to publish some excerpts from this fascinating interview.

How did you first get interested in Japanese kimonos?

“I first became interested in Japanese kimonos when I saw one in a store. It was so beautiful and different from anything else I had seen before. It was amazing the way it flowed when the woman wearing it moved. I was curious about the culture and history behind it, so I did some research and found out that Japanese kimonos are made of silk and are worn for special occasions.

While researching these robes, I learned that there are two types of kimonos: yukata and kimono yukata. Yukata are made of lighter fabric and are usually worn during summer festivals, while kimono yukata are made of heavier fabric and are worn during winter festivals. I was fascinated by all the different colors and patterns, and I knew that I wanted to learn more about Japanese kimonos. Even though I don’t live in Japan, I decided to buy a yukata so that I could experience the culture for myself. Every time I put on my yukata; I feel like I’ve been transported to another world.”

What is your favorite thing about Japanese kimonos?

“There are so many things to love about Japanese culture, but Japanese kimonos are my favorite thing.  I love the way they are both traditional and modern, and I love the way they can be either simple or ornate. I also love the way that kimonos can be worn for both casual and formal occasions. My favorite kimono is my yukata, which is a casual kimono made of cotton. I love how comfortable it is, and I love how many compliments I receive.

My closet also contains a few semi-formal kimonos, which I wear for special occasions. Putting one on always makes me feel like a warrior or elite statesman when I wear them. Japanese kimonos are truly a work of art, and I am grateful to be able to wear them. I am even more grateful to be able to share my love of the kimono with others by operating Chopa – Your Kimono Source.”

Do you think kimonos will continue to be popular in the future?

“The Japanese kimono is a traditional garment with a long history. dating back to the 8th century. Because kimonos have been around for centuries, it is highly doubtful they will be going out of style any time soon. Today, kimonos are not only an iconic part of Japanese history, but they are also part of world history.

While they were once only worn on special occasions, nowadays it is not uncommon to see people wearing kimonos as everyday clothing. Many Japanese fashion brands have begun releasing their lines of kimonos, which has helped to increase their popularity even further. They have also been embraced by the youth culture in Japan and overseas.”

How Often Do You Wear Them?

“I love wearing yukata, and I wear one at least five times a week during the summer months. It is a treat to come home from work or a day out, take a soothing shower, and slip into my yukata. It instantly relaxes me and any stress I had is gone. It’s a great way to stay cool while still looking stylish.

Plus, it’s always fun to get dressed up in traditional Japanese clothing In the cooler months it varies, but most people that know me are never surprised when they pop over and I am in my kimono or yukata when I answer the door. I love the short-length Happi Coats in the summer.  Whether I am watering my plants on the patio, doing a little clean-up around the house, or sitting by the pool, it becomes a part of me.”

This is Part one in a series. Ron Irving has been managing Chopa for many years and his understanding of the kimono has been so beneficial to our company and our customers.  Shop our online store 24 hours a day. Check back again soon for Part 2 of his interview.

                   Let’s Talk About Kimonos

Kimono or Yukata?

August 20th, 2022

We receive questions about Japanese Kimonos and Yukatas daily. Periodically we like to share some of these to help educate others that are shopping for these wonderful robes.

What is the difference between a kimono and a yukata?

Japanese kimonos and yukatas are both traditional Japanese garments. Kimonos are more formal than yukatas and are often worn for special occasions, such as weddings or tea ceremonies. Yukatas are less formal and are often worn to outdoor events, such as festivals or fireworks displays. Both kimonos and yukatas can be either long or short. The length of a kimono or yukata is determined by the season and the occasion for which it is worn.

Kimonos are commonly made of both silk and cotton. Yukatas are made of cotton. Kimonos are typically worn in cooler months, while yukata are worn in warmer months.  Today, these traditions still exist but it has become a personal choice. Yukatas are popular year-round in many parts of the world, especially in warmer climates. Kimonos are worn anytime as well. It depends on the weight of the fabric. Both are often referred to as the Best Loungewear you can find.

What is the best way to wash a kimono or yukata?

We suggest you check with the manufacturer or dealer where you purchase your garment. At Chopa – Your Kimono Source, all cotton kimonos, and yukatas are machine washable. We recommend using cold water, in a gentle cycle. This not only maintains the colors but extends the life of your robe. Many customers drip dry their robe on a hanger although it’s possible to machine dry on a low-temperature setting. Drip drying will prolong the life of the fabric.

How long does it take to receive my kimono?

We ship quickly because we know how important fast shipping is today. At Chopa, most orders are shipped within one business day, and many orders ship the same day. The earlier you place your order in the day increases the odds of shipping the same day. Your kimono ships from a warehouse in the Panhandle of Florida. We import all of our robes directly from Japan so you don’t have to wait 4-6 weeks to receive your order. Over 95% of our orders arrive at our customer’s doorstep within 3 business days, many in just two. We like to say that we give our customers the benefits of an Amazon Prime membership without the $149.00 annual fee. It’s our gift to you.

What if I don’t like the Fit of my Kimono?

That is not a problem. We offer exchanges or refunds with no questions asked. Simply contact us within 14 days of receiving your order. We will send you the simple instructions and provide you with a 14-day window to return the item. Of course, we require that the robe is unworn and in new condition.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is very reasonable. We charge a low fee of $6.95 for one kimono or yukata but provide Free Shipping anywhere in the USA if your purchase is $75.00 or more. Unlike many retailers, we don’t have exclusions. Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico are included.

Do we ship to Post Office Boxes?

We do ship to PO Boxes, however in most cases since we have to use USPS, we can often ship it quicker if you have a street address for delivery.

How do I tell which length is right for me?

We offer a great selection of kimono and yukata sizes including long, short, and plus-sizing for both men and women. For the length, we suggest using a  tape measure and start at your shoulder and allow the tape to drop down your side. This is where the robe will fall on you.

Occasionally customers ask where the length should fall, but this is a personal choice. Some people like it to their ankles while others prefer it above the foot. There are also those who like shorter-length robes like our Happi Coats which fall just above, too, or below the knees. The length will be different for every person depending on your height. Buy what you like and be comfortable, that is what matters the most. Your comfort, your decision, and your kimono!

Retail Theft Comes In Many Forms

July 17th, 2022

Retail theft is a common problem across the United States. Shoplifters often think of it as a victimless crime. The truth is that retailers lose millions of dollars every year due to theft. It’s easy to understand why someone might steal a physical object, like a piece of jewelry or a pair of shoes. But it’s not always so clear why someone might steal something that can’t be seen.

This doesn’t mean that the motives aren’t just as complex and interesting. Retail theft comes in many different forms, with motivations that range from financial need to psychological compulsion. Understanding these motivations is key to preventing theft.  It can also help those who may have committed it in the past.

So what are some of the most common types of retail theft?  In a physical retail environment, it can range from stealing merchandise, changing price tags, passing bad checks, using a stolen credit card, or counterfeit money. Not only do you have to watch customers, but also employees. Employee theft is a major obstacle for store owners.

Internet and Web stores that only sell online have different kinds of problems. Financial security is a major consideration when accepting credit cards online. The use of stolen credit cards to purchase goods is prevalent. Online stores must take added precautions on web purchases. Some of the safeguards include only accepting valid billing addresses, security codes, and a host of other proprietary technological tools used behind the scenes.

Another theft that occurs in brick and mortar stores and web stores is Intellectual Property. This includes stealing product descriptions and plagiarizing store information. Thefts include informative articles, blogs, advertising, and commonly your copyrighted and trademarked photos and images. Internet thieves in need of photos for their website will steal yours. This is piracy. They use them for personal financial gain rather than going through the expense of creating their own.

Producing images of products and services doesn’t usually come cheap. Depending on the quality and depth of your image needs, you may hire a photographer, build and outfit your studio or rent someone else’s. You might hire models who can add make-up, hair, and clothing costs. They say copying your work or stealing images from your site is the sincerest form of flattery but it goes beyond that.

A good photo is worth many times its acquisition cost because images drive sales. If a customer sees a beautiful kimono in an image, it allows them to make a reasonable decision to purchase that product. Since kimonos and yukatas are so unique, photos can take into account many hours of creative thinking, and intellect. It also uses the time of others when using models, photographers, set designers, editors, and more.

We have caught dozens of “so-called” competitors stealing our images over the years. We usually resolve this by sending a Cease and Desist Notice. In most cases, the thieves complied and removed the pictures. Others ignored us until we had our attorneys write a demand letter. Two companies didn’t think it was a big deal until we filed suit in court and won. Neither of these two is in business any longer.

Overseas dealers regularly use our product descriptions, sizing information, and ideas on their websites.  We chalk this up to being one of the Internet’s Leading Providers of Authentic Japanese Kimonos and Yukatas. We have been online since 1994 and other businesses look up to us. They feel stealing from us may help their success too. It comes down to ethics and morals. If you steal others’ work, you don’t have ethics, therefore you will steal and cheat your customers as well.

We have various methods to check for copyright theft. These include the use of digital watermarks, scheduled web surfing, customer reports, and other dealers word of mouth. A recent theft incident arose on a website that deals in Kimonos, Japanese knickknacks, and tourist trade trinkets. This site dared to steal and use over two dozen images that belonged to us. The couple who own this business never asked for permission. They feel stealing others property in the darkness of their home is easier. Can you imagine how they might lie and cheat their  customers?

Ironically this theft was discovered by a staff member processing an order they submitted. Since they are so familiar with our website they thought to take advantage of a clearance sale we have for some kid’s kimonos and outfits. Priced below cost, they were savvy to recognize the deal. But they are so arrogant, they didn’t think that using their business name on the order might lead to someone surfing their site simply out of curiosity. We don’t discourage competitors from taking advantage of our sales, but we frown on thieves stealing our copyrighted images.

Management wrote them a cease and desist notice and they complied and removed the images. Not only did they steal images outright, but they also modified some to use for alternate products. The real irony was the reply letter one owner sent us. He tried to come off as the victim, alluding that we were overzealous in our demand. This owner relayed how knowledgeable he was on the laws of image theft and placed blame on some rogue employees that come and go.  He proceeded to explain how reputable he is and how many friends he has and works with within the industry.

We say with friends like this, watch your backs or at a minimum watch the images on your website. Unfortunately, these situations will happen again. It is part of being in business.  Our issue besides stealing from us is the time consumption involved with calling the thieves out. We would rather spend our time providing our customers with quality service, value, and the fast shipping they receive, rather than banter back and forth with crooks.  You can shop online 24 hours a day in our online Kimono Shop. Our Shop is safe, secure and honest.

What is a Chinese Kimono?

July 2nd, 2022

Chinese Kimono?  I thought Kimonos came from Japan?

Does this sound familiar?  If you are shopping for an authentic Japanese kimono, you should become familiar with the games and tricks that some dealers use. The kimono was created in Japan and is still the hallmark of Japanese-inspired clothing today. Kimono was once commonly worn with Chinese-influenced hakama, which is a type of long skirt. If the hakama had dividers separating the legs, they were similar to pants.  Some believe that because this combo was worn well over 1000 years ago, kimonos originated in China, but that is not the case.

To connoisseurs of kimono and yukata robes, nothing says “kimono” like “Made in Japan.” It is fairly easy to determine if a vendor is selling a true Japanese kimono. We see ads frequently that mask the true origination or disguise the fact they are made elsewhere. There is only one authentic kimono and those are made in Japan.

Not a week passes that we receive an email from a customer feeling betrayed or cheated by a kimono they purchased online. They thought they were buying a garment made in Japan, but in reality, it was a Chinese-made knock-off. This isn’t to say the quality isn’t adequate or that it can’t be called a kimono, but calling it a Japanese kimono is simply wrong. Why would dealers do this? To make more money and to sell a disguised counterfeit product to unsuspecting buyers.

Selling platforms like Amazon and Etsy need to do a better job enforcing “Truth in Advertising” laws and rules. Chopa has always had strong ethics and believes in being completely honest with our customers and non-customers. We have done so for over 28 years which we believe is one of the reasons we are still thriving in business today. We would never want to jeopardize our reputation or trick a customer just to make a buck.

There are unscrupulous dealers online and we are happy when customer writes us to tell us what a great experience they had shopping in our online Kimono Shop and how much they like the kimono. Unfortunately we receive those stories from customers that shopped elsewhere needing someone to talk to or help them if any remedy is possible.

A major rule of thumb in locating a Japanese Kimono are the words, “Made in Japan.” After all how much simpler can it get? If it is made there, it should say so in the description. Instead you will find Japanese Style, Japanese Inspired, or a blatant use of Japanese Kimono even when it isn’t made in Japan.  Take a look at Amazon or Etsy and you can determine where it is made.  Look for “ships from Bali” or a Chinese named business.

Checking on Amazon’s reviews allows you to discover what other customers already did. Here is a sampling of random reviews we found that say it all.

“The reviews here are misleading. It is not made in Japan.” – 2/11/21

“Needs to be washed. My complaint is the fabric is stiff and scratchy.” – 7/14/20

“Sending it back. The description and Q&A led me to believe this was made in Japan. The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was a Made in China tag.” – 9/01/19

“The kimono I received has a Made in China tag. I am very disappointed.” – 8/30/19

Those are very self-explanatory but one of our favorites (being sarcastic here) is the one review that states that the  “Made in China isn’t an issue. This is a Japanese brand that is made in China for Japanese markets, it is not a knock-off.” We would assume this was written by the dealer themselves. We have never heard of such ridiculous reasoning. There is no such thing. It’s just a ploy.

If you have any questions about buying a kimono, we of course welcome you to visit our online kimono Shop. Browse around, look at the different styles and know that all of our robes are finely crafted in Japan and imported directly to the USA for the enjoyment of our customers. We don’t make up stories, we don’t exaggerate and we don’t hide vital information.

Don’t ever assume that because a dealer says Japanese Kimono it is made in Japan. If it is, the dealer should say so, clearly and directly in the description, just like we do. Send us questions or stories you have about your shopping experience whether with us or another source. If we can guide you down the right path, we will certainly do so.

Some dealers on the web do unscrupulous things to compete in the online world of retail. One of our upcoming blogs will be about discovering that a competitor stole and published over two dozen copyrighted images from our website to use on their own site. No permission, no licensing agreement, no request, just blatant theft. If a retailer openly steals images, what else would they steal from you in the process of a sale?
