The Ultimate Guide to Kimono: Answers to Common Questions

Saturday, January 27th, 2024

Kimono and yukata have always been a symbol of the vibrant Japanese culture. These robes are not only comfortable to wear but also add a touch of elegance to your wardrobe. Here at Chopa, we receive lots of questions about kimono and yukata which is why we’re here to answer some more. So whether you’re looking to buy your first kimono or want to know more about their meaning, we are here to help.

Does color have any meaning with kimono?
Yes, the color of a kimono holds significant meaning. The most commonly known colors are red and white. Red is associated with good luck and is often worn during weddings or other celebrations. It also signifies strong emotions and power. White, on the other hand, symbolizes purity, innocence, and mourning. There are many other colors that convey different meanings, such as green, which represents growth and vigor, while blue signifies calmness. It is common to find a mix of colors as well.

Do the motifs and patterns on a kimono have any meaning?
Yes, every motif and pattern on a kimono has a specific meaning. For example, cherry blossom (sakura) is known to represent the beginning of a new life. Maple seeds (momiji) represent sound judgement. You can also find patterns such as cranes, which are a symbol of longevity and good luck. The dragonfly is considered to bring happiness and strength. These beautiful patterns are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also a reflection of the Japanese culture.

How much do kimono cost?
The cost of a kimono tends to vary significantly. It depends on the quality of the fabric, the intricacy of the design, and the availability of materials. A hand-sewn, silk kimono can cost you tens of thousands of dollars, while a more affordable option like cotton or polyester fabric can range from $50 to $500. However, at Chopa, we offer a range of choices that fit into any budget.

How do I wear a kimono?
Wearing a kimono can seem daunting at first, but fear not! The first thing you need to do is to put on the juban, an undergarment that covers your skin and makes it more comfortable to wear the kimono. Western culture often prefers a light undergarment like an undershirt and lightweight shorts or leggings. Then slip the kimono on, making sure the collar sits evenly at the back of your neck. Next, wrap the obi (a belt or sash) tightly around your waist, and tie it in a soft knot. Finally, adjust the length of the kimono and tie the obi in a bow. Voila! You’re now wearing your very own kimono.

How do I take care of my kimono?
Taking care of your kimono is essential if you want it to last a long time. On high end robes made of silk, we recommend spot cleaning using a mild detergent (Woolite) and a soft-bristled brush. For cotton robes, machine washing is possible in a cold water, delicate cycle. The cold water helps preserve the life of the kimono longer. As always, follow the instructions on the tag or ask the manufacturer for recommendations on how to care for your robe. If you do need to clean the entire garment, the manufacturer might recommend taking it to a professional dry cleaner who specializes in kimono and yukata.

The popularity of kimono and yukata has skyrocketed in the recent past, and it’s no wonder why. They exude an air of elegance and sophistication. and there are a wide variety of designs catering to different tastes. Whether you’re looking for a traditional pattern or a more contemporary design, make sure you know what they symbolize. And while kimono may have a reputation for being expensive, there are options available for every budget. Which Kimono or Yukata should I buy?

Monday, December 18th, 2023

Traditional Japanese robes, Kimonos, and Yukatas have been popular choices among fashion enthusiasts worldwide. With its intricate patterns, vivid colors, and sophisticated designs, these robes are a perfect combination of elegance and comfort. However, with so many options available in the market, deciding which one to buy can be daunting. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

In this article, we will guide you on how to pick the best Kimono or Yukata from our online shop. First and foremost, it is essential to consider the size while making a purchase. Our online Kimono shop offers robes in different lengths and sizes, catering to all body types. Our collection includes robes categorized by Short-length, Regular, Plus-sized, Tall, and Big and Tall for men and women. So, measure yourself accurately and select the appropriate size for a comfortable and personalized fit.

Now comes the tricky part – choosing the perfect design and pattern. Our online shop features over 100 styles of Kimonos and Yukatas with varied patterns and colors. If you’re struggling with the array of choices, take some inspiration from our Top-Five Sellers list for November. This list features the most popular robes sold in the previous month, voted by our customers.

The top favorites include:

Yukata – Tree of Life

Dragon and Bamboo – Yukata

Yukata – Eternal Chain

Blue Koi Yukata

Yukata – Dragon and Mt Fuji, Blue

You can’t go wrong with any of these choices!

Another factor to consider while choosing a Kimono or Yukata is the fabric. While cotton is the most commonly used fabric for these robes and offers a comfortable and lightweight fit, there are options to choose from. Robes can be made from silk, polyester, and even satin. It all depends on your preference and the occasion. For instance, if you’re looking for something luxurious for a special occasion, a silk robe would be an excellent choice.

Besides the design and fabric, the purpose of the robe is also vital. Kimonos and Yukatas serve various purposes, ranging from casual wear to formal occasions. If you’re looking for something to wear as a cover-up for swimwear or lounging at home, a casual yukata with bright colors or floral patterns would make an excellent choice. For formal occasions like weddings and ceremonies, opt for a luxurious robe or a subtle, elegant Kimono.

In conclusion, we understand that selecting the perfect Kimono or Yukata from an extensive collection can be overwhelming. However, keeping in mind certain factors like size, design, fabric, and the purpose of the robe can make the process simpler.

At our online shop, we offer a broad range of Kimonos and Yukatas that cater to all these considerations. So, start your search with a design or color you adore, and trust us, the rest will fall into place. Remember, there’s no such thing as a bad choice in Kimonos!

How To Buy a Kimono Online

Sunday, December 18th, 2022

We frequently receive questions from friends and customers about how to buy a kimono. Sometimes they ask where to buy a kimono and what should someone know when buying a kimono.  Let’s walk through some basics of purchasing an authentic Japanese kimono.

One of the most important aspects of buying a kimono is how you plan to wear it.  Is this for lounging? Are you attending an event? What is the event and when? If you simply love Japanese culture and want a kimono to wear as a robe or for lounging, then simple cotton robes are the best choice. Robes made of 100% cotton are easy to care for and good quality garments are machine washable.

A soft cotton kimono or lighter-weight yukata is wonderful for lounging around the house. After a soothing shower, slipping into a kimono is not only practical and easy but is extremely comfortable to wear. The distinctive designs place you in a mood and mind of your own. The designs can be very relaxing to the eye and help you remain calm and destressed after a long day. We often find people wearing one after a swim or as a coverup at the beach. Useful, practical, and stylish – that is what a kimono is all about.

If you are seeking a kimono to wear to a ceremony or special event, a cotton robe is still a good choice. Cotton fabric is available in many grades and levels of quality. A tightly woven fabric with a decent cotton count makes for a long-lasting, frequently worn treasure. One you can wear often for many years. The type of design or print will be important depending on the event you attend. The design should flow with the ceremony or social gathering. Consider it similar to a wedding. How formal is the wedding? How formal is the event?  Be practical in your choice and you will not only look great but feel good too.

It is fairly easy to purchase a kimono today. As the popularity has increased, especially in the west, there has also been an influx of dealers or retailers offering these beautiful robes. Shopping online is the easiest. Locate a dealer that has a large selection, quick shipping, especially if you are in a hurry, and easy returns in case it doesn’t fit the exact way you like. One wants to be very careful when shopping online. Like buying anything there are unscrupulous dealers and below-standard retailers trying to take advantage of customers.

We prefer shipping with a dealer that has a long and extensive track record. After all, if a business has been around for over 20 years, it says something about them. In general, a business with a long history shows stability in the market place and their experience will help you find what you are looking for. We receive countless emails each month about foreign-based dealers and the bad experiences customers had with them.

Bad results from shopping overseas include lengthy transit and shipping times. Dealers may offer delivery in a few days but it actually takes over a month to arrive. Taxes, duties and import fees are another issue we hear about. The customer wasn’t told that there may be import taxes due and discover this when they get a bill for $10-$40 for these fees.

Returns seem to be an automatic nightmare for many. Countless unanswered emails and phone calls, translation issues and simple refusals to accept a return are common. Shipping a kimono back to Japan or Asia can be very expensive. Costs range from $25 and up to $45 depending on the level of service, weight, insurance and tracking services.

There are also many dealers who lie about the robes. They ship alternate patterns and prints, use a different fabric and sizing can be far different than what is advertised. A big deception that takes place is where the garment is made. While dealers may claim a Japanese origin, they are often made in China, Viet Nam or Pakistan.

In simple terms, locate a dealer based in the USA. Be sure their reviews provide a positive experience. Look at social media to see they are active and in steady business. Check their listings to see if the Japanese kimono is actually made in Japan. Verify their return policy. Are returns accepted without a lot of fine print and exclusions? Has the online retailer been in business at least 15 years or longer?  If the answer is yes, then you should have some confidence in making your purchase and having comfort that the dealer will honor their promise.

This online dealer has been a leading kimono specialist for nearly 30 years….https://www.chopa.com and has one of the best reputations around.

Ordering Christmas Gifts Online

Saturday, December 3rd, 2022

Kimonos and yukatas are the perfect gifts for anyone who loves Japanese culture or wants to try something new. They are beautiful, traditional garments that can be worn in many different ways. Some believe it is difficult to find the right size or style, so they should visit www.chopa.com.

Chopa is Your Kimono Source and they make the process painless. Carrying a broad selection of over 100 styles, prints, patterns, and sizes, Kimono shopping is made easy. Chopa was one of the first online retailers of Japanese kimonos and was at the forefront of offering a range of sizes so everyone can find what they need. From short length to tall, wide, and plus-sized, Chopa stocks a kimono for you.

So whether you’re looking for a gift for a friend or a family member who has everything, your problem is solved. Better yet, treat yourself to the comfort and style a kimono offers. Whether lounging on a weekend or working around the house, the perfect kimono or yukata awaits you.

Here are some kimono-buying tips to help.

First, when you are buying clothing as a gift, be sure to check the size charts before you buy. It can be frustrating getting a kimono or yukata that’s too small or too large. Second, take a look at the return policy before you make your purchase. Some stores have stricter return policies during the holidays, so it’s best to be prepared. Chopa extends the return and exchange window so you can enjoy the Holidays rather than interrupting the festivities to head to the post office.

Have the recipient try on the robe and check the fit. Do not use the item as most return policies are voided if worn. Some may want to wear it for a week to see if they like it, but that isn’t an appropriate move if you decide to return it. One thing we will say is that most people if apprehensive at first, find the more they wear it, the better they like it. This is true of the fit as well as the cultural shock that some have. They become a warrior or Kimono princesses.

We recommend shopping early. Stores usually have the best selection early in the buying season. Another factor in shopping online is shipping. You want to be sure the store you are shopping with will ship your gifts with plenty of time for the Holiday. This allows extra time in case of weather delays, a carrier issue, or a random situation that pops up.

Chopa prides itself on quick shipping. Most orders ship within one business day of order placement. Depending on the type of shipping you choose, transit times will take between 2 and 5 business days. During busy Holiday periods, Chopa has additional shipping experts help out. If needed, they operate 7 days a week to keep up with the order flow. Chopa wants your gifts and orders to arrive on time. Service is a priority and always has been.

Here are this year’s deadlines to be sure your package arrives on time.  Understand that some conditions are beyond the control of Chopa including weather delays, high-volume carrier surges, etc.  Happy Holidays everybody! This is the Season to enjoy.

Kimono or Yukata?

Saturday, August 20th, 2022

We receive questions about Japanese Kimonos and Yukatas daily. Periodically we like to share some of these to help educate others that are shopping for these wonderful robes.

What is the difference between a kimono and a yukata?

Japanese kimonos and yukatas are both traditional Japanese garments. Kimonos are more formal than yukatas and are often worn for special occasions, such as weddings or tea ceremonies. Yukatas are less formal and are often worn to outdoor events, such as festivals or fireworks displays. Both kimonos and yukatas can be either long or short. The length of a kimono or yukata is determined by the season and the occasion for which it is worn.

Kimonos are commonly made of both silk and cotton. Yukatas are made of cotton. Kimonos are typically worn in cooler months, while yukata are worn in warmer months.  Today, these traditions still exist but it has become a personal choice. Yukatas are popular year-round in many parts of the world, especially in warmer climates. Kimonos are worn anytime as well. It depends on the weight of the fabric. Both are often referred to as the Best Loungewear you can find.

What is the best way to wash a kimono or yukata?

We suggest you check with the manufacturer or dealer where you purchase your garment. At Chopa – Your Kimono Source, all cotton kimonos, and yukatas are machine washable. We recommend using cold water, in a gentle cycle. This not only maintains the colors but extends the life of your robe. Many customers drip dry their robe on a hanger although it’s possible to machine dry on a low-temperature setting. Drip drying will prolong the life of the fabric.

How long does it take to receive my kimono?

We ship quickly because we know how important fast shipping is today. At Chopa, most orders are shipped within one business day, and many orders ship the same day. The earlier you place your order in the day increases the odds of shipping the same day. Your kimono ships from a warehouse in the Panhandle of Florida. We import all of our robes directly from Japan so you don’t have to wait 4-6 weeks to receive your order. Over 95% of our orders arrive at our customer’s doorstep within 3 business days, many in just two. We like to say that we give our customers the benefits of an Amazon Prime membership without the $149.00 annual fee. It’s our gift to you.

What if I don’t like the Fit of my Kimono?

That is not a problem. We offer exchanges or refunds with no questions asked. Simply contact us within 14 days of receiving your order. We will send you the simple instructions and provide you with a 14-day window to return the item. Of course, we require that the robe is unworn and in new condition.

How much is shipping?

Shipping is very reasonable. We charge a low fee of $6.95 for one kimono or yukata but provide Free Shipping anywhere in the USA if your purchase is $75.00 or more. Unlike many retailers, we don’t have exclusions. Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico are included.

Do we ship to Post Office Boxes?

We do ship to PO Boxes, however in most cases since we have to use USPS, we can often ship it quicker if you have a street address for delivery.

How do I tell which length is right for me?

We offer a great selection of kimono and yukata sizes including long, short, and plus-sizing for both men and women. For the length, we suggest using a  tape measure and start at your shoulder and allow the tape to drop down your side. This is where the robe will fall on you.

Occasionally customers ask where the length should fall, but this is a personal choice. Some people like it to their ankles while others prefer it above the foot. There are also those who like shorter-length robes like our Happi Coats which fall just above, too, or below the knees. The length will be different for every person depending on your height. Buy what you like and be comfortable, that is what matters the most. Your comfort, your decision, and your kimono!

If you want to see what sizes, styles, prints, and colors are available, take a look at our online Kimono Shop. It is open 24 hours a day!

Buying a Japanese Men’s Yukata?

Thursday, May 5th, 2022

If you’re looking for a way to spice up your loungewear wardrobe, then look no further than the Japanese yukata.

Do you find yourself looking for the best of both worlds? Comfort and style? That’s exactly how the yukata feels. Fashionable, yet functional. The Japanese yukata is more than just a robe. A yukata is a lighter-weight robe that can be worn during celebrations or festivals to show off its beauty while also serving as loungewear at home.

These Japanese robes have been around since ancient times for hundreds if not thousands of years. In modern times, the yukata has become a dominant factor in the world of loungewear. Made of high-quality soft cotton fabrics, it is breathable, not too heavy, and easy to wear and care for.

The gorgeous patterns and designs of authentic Japanese robes are created by distinguished artists in Japan. The designs incorporate original works with historic and traditional patterns. From tigers, Mt. Fuji, hawks, flowers, fish, mountains, trees, scenery, and similar nature-inspired objects, the result is a work of art that you can wear.

One of our more popular men’s yukata robes is the Dragon and Hawk design.   This men’s robe displays the dragon and hawk taking flight among Japanese Tsuri pines. Accented in gold and white and set against a black background. The robe has butterfly sleeves and a matching belt is included.

The Dragon is a powerful creature that can be found in different corners of the world. They are wise creatures that can be found all over our planet. Dragons are seen as guardians with destructive potential, but their protective nature symbolizes strength and bravery for those willing to take them on or need it most. This may explain why this animal has been associated so strongly over time by many cultures around our globe.

The way we see it now? Dragons represent intelligence and thus knowledge, creativity skills like artistry and design; moreover, they’re modest too: meaning shyness and modesty will come up when dealing directly with outside forces.

Because these dragons have been known fighters in battles past, long before any man was born, their spirit remains today among us humans because each one knows what bravery means.  They are bold fighters, and dragons represent a fighting spirit and nobility.

The Hawk is a bird of high spirits, great courage, and bravery. An old proverb says that “a wise hawk hides its talents.” Thus, the hawk is a clever creature that represents someone who’s successful but doesn’t believe in showing off all they have done. Instead, they maintain an airy estimation of what they can do best.

The Hawk pairs well with Dragons because they’re able to utilize these qualities for them not to get noticed by others. This aligns with what it means when paired together; the dragon symbolizes boldness alongside strength while also representing intelligence; this makes one a very talented but modest person!

Our authentic Dragon and Hawk yukata are skillfully crafted in Japan of high-quality 100% cotton with a shrink-resistant finish. This yukata is easy to care for and is comfortable to wear. We recommend cold water washing to extend the life of your robe and the beautiful design. It is available in four men’s sizes; Small/Medium, Large, Large/Tall, and XL/Wide.

Chopa – Your Kimono Source has been a leading online retailer since 1994. We are located in the USA and ship quickly from the northwest panhandle of Florida. Most orders ship within one business day. As a USA-based retailer, we have taken the hassles out of online Kimono shopping.

You can shop our Online Kimono Shop 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We offer a large selection of Japanese Kimono and Yukata robes for men, women, and kids. As a direct importer, we respond quickly and provide fast shipping.  Orders of $75 or more ship Free anywhere in the USA, including Alaska and Hawaii.

You will never pay customs, duties, or import taxes when shopping with us. We often hear the stories of customers who bought online from a dealer in Asia only to discover that shipping was not fast, but rather it took several weeks (if lucky) or months. Then they were faced with customs, duties, and import processing fees which added as much as 50% of the cost of the robe.

We also make returns simple and easy.  Don’t be fooled by the promise made by overseas dealers. A common complaint we hear is how they never respond or answer emails or worse yet, they refuse returns. Shipping a kimono back to Asia is expensive.
